in 1996, when my son was killed, 96 homicides in san francisco. everybody seemed to think that it was just another day in my community. no one knew the pain i was suffering. no one knew when i was going through. no one knew how this affected my family, my children, my community. no one seemed to care. i do it because what happened in columbine should have happened in my neighborhood, and it did not. there was no one there for me when this happened to me. i was formally -- formerly a gang member who grew up in san francisco. we all have stories of guys involved with the gang. everyone has a different story of why they joined. my thing is, i believe it works for me to be involved with kids who were in gangs -- i worked with all of the shot colors and i had a goal while i was there. it took me 10 years before i started to transform my life. in the meantime i have the goal that i wanted to be out here. i wanted the opportunity. i was given a life sentence in 1979. i was involved in gang and i caught a murder case. 15 years to life -- and i came here in 1979 and i got out -- and i have been out for almost five years. in my heart, i knew i found a solution when i was incarcerated. and there are different stories. some of the kids joined the gangs because they want to fit into something. some of them don't have a family, and the father and mother are working. for a lot of kids, there is a lot of idle time. it is not like, i will join the gang and i will shoot you. you grow up that way, and before you know you a

san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doing something about it, including the officials in san francisco. and some have been at this longer than others to try to do something about it, have reached limitations. yet again, i think this tragedy at sandy hook reminds us that we've got to keep trying and we've got to keep doing more about it. and, so, i want to first of all recognize that senator feinstein, in my conversations with her, and the tragedies she's experienced as mayor of san francisco as well as her attempts to ban assault weapons and had done so in the past, and that her federal assault leg

i am proud that their here in san francisco and decided to call san francisco their home. we have seen the momentum in the midmarket area as twitter and yammer and -- have moved into the area. the most important thing is a job pipeline. we want to create jobs in the city but we want to make sure that we are also helping san francisco residents be able to attain those jobs as well. it is through many of these meetings the purpose of this hearing is to find out what is now occurring with the ssf tech program, we want to get a summary of the number and demographics of the participants the technology, and the number of trainees placed in employment. and the skills and training needed for workers to participate in the technology sector. i am excited about this hearing. i know many of us have been talking about it and to see what the progress is been thus far, and what outcome has been gained and what we hope the outcomes will be. it is important that we do this now and that we work together on this. i am excited to have this hearing in the next few months. thank you. the rest i
